Food/Natural Products and Medication Interactions

Summary: for 2.5-3 hour presentation.
(Can be presented in 2 sessions 1.25-1.5 hours each)

The presentation provides practical approaches to prevention and diagnosis of food-medication
interactions. Patient counseling, assessment and medical nutrition therapy are discussed.
Specific case studies with interactive discussion and the hands on experiences of the
presenters create an interesting and stimulating format.
Dr. Crowe begins the presentation with the basics of pharmacokinetics, with examples of
the effect of food or herbal/natural products on medication absorption, distribution,
metabolism and excretion is explained in an easy to understand manner.
Conversely the effects of medication on food and nutrient absorption, metabolism and
excretion will be discussed. Modification of medication action and the enhanced and
competitive effects of food or herbal/natural products and drug actions will be presented
by author, Zaneta Pronsky. Medication or herbal actions that affect nutritional status are delineated.
A question and answer period completes the presentation.

Also available:

A) 4 hour workshop format. Additional natural product/medication and
ethanol/medication interaction information, plus more case studies/ audience interaction.

B) 2 hour basic session on Food-Medication Interactions.

Drug Therapy of Alzheimer’s Dementia

Summary:
The presentation begins with a brief discussion of Alzheimer’s symptoms, diagnosis and progression. The pharmacology of cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine (Namenda) used to treat Alzheimer’s is delineated.  Drugs used to treat symptoms of dementia are then presented.

Adverse reactions of each class is reviewed with emphasis on clinically significant food-medication and herbal/dietary supplement-medication interactions. Case studies throughout the presentation offer practical applications and “real life” situations.

Pharmacology Of Diabetic Medications:

What Health Care Professionals Should Know About Diabetes Medications

Summary:
The presentation begins with a brief overview of the pathophysiology of type I and type II diabetes.   The results of two recent studies confirming the importance of tight blood glucose control are described in the introduction as well.  The mechanism of action, precautions, and adverse reactions of each class of diabetes medications is presented.

Clinically significant food-medication and herbal/dietary supplement-medication interactions are explained. Case studies throughout the presentation offer practical application and “real life” situations of the material presented.

Pharmacology of Selected Antihypertensive/Cardiac Agents

Psychotropic Drugs, Nutritional And Weight Management Considerations

Summary:
This presentation defines psychotropic medications and the rationale for their use in healthcare facilities. Pharmacology of each class of psychotropic drug is presented with emphasis on the mechanisms by which medication can affect nutritional status, including weight fluctuation.
Discussed are MNT (medical nutrition therapy) for drug side effects that affect nutritional status and specific assessment of nutritional problems in patients receiving psychotropic medications. “Real life” case studies provide practical approaches to apply this information to specific patients in the health care setting.
