Psychotropic Drugs, Nutritional And Weight Management Considerations

Summary:
This presentation defines psychotropic medications and the rationale for their use in healthcare facilities. Pharmacology of each class of psychotropic drug is presented with emphasis on the mechanisms by which medication can affect nutritional status, including weight fluctuation.
Discussed are MNT (medical nutrition therapy) for drug side effects that affect nutritional status and specific assessment of nutritional problems in patients receiving psychotropic medications. “Real life” case studies provide practical approaches to apply this information to specific patients in the health care setting.
