Food/Natural Products and Medication Interactions

Summary: for 2.5-3 hour presentation.
(Can be presented in 2 sessions 1.25-1.5 hours each)

The presentation provides practical approaches to prevention and diagnosis of food-medication
interactions. Patient counseling, assessment and medical nutrition therapy are discussed.
Specific case studies with interactive discussion and the hands on experiences of the
presenters create an interesting and stimulating format.
Dr. Crowe begins the presentation with the basics of pharmacokinetics, with examples of
the effect of food or herbal/natural products on medication absorption, distribution,
metabolism and excretion is explained in an easy to understand manner.
Conversely the effects of medication on food and nutrient absorption, metabolism and
excretion will be discussed. Modification of medication action and the enhanced and
competitive effects of food or herbal/natural products and drug actions will be presented
by author, Zaneta Pronsky. Medication or herbal actions that affect nutritional status are delineated.
A question and answer period completes the presentation.
